The Role of Our Psychiatrists in Your Assessment
As part of your assessment, you will have the opportunity to see a psychiatrist and be assessed by a clinically robust, multidisciplinary team, potentially leading to a diagnosis of ADHD. Our recommendations are holistic in nature, aiming to give clients and families a range of ways to access support for the difficulties they are experiencing. Our psychiatrists bring medical expertise to every assessment, including the ability to consider medication where appropriate. But their role within our service is not simply to recommend medication. Instead, they consider the individual as a whole and think broadly about what is likely to be in that person's best interests. This holistic clinical thinking complements the psychological assessment particularly well. Recommendations can draw on psychological interventions, psychoeducation, practical or environmental adjustments, lifestyle factors, and other forms of support, alongside medication where this is clinically indicated. Where medication is not considered appropriate or necessary, our psychiatrists will formulate and recommend alternative approaches instead.
On Medication
Where medication may be of benefit, our psychiatrists can explain how it works and advise on how it is likely to support you or your child. Any recommendation is made through discussion within our multidisciplinary team, and we will always aim to give honest and fair advice. If medication is considered the primary and most effective intervention for a particular case, this will always be communicated clearly and openly.Prescribing itself sits with a GP rather than with our psychiatrists directly. To make this as straightforward as possible, we work in partnership with private GPs who are able to prescribe, so that any recommendation can be followed through without unnecessary delay.
